The 2020 Pandemic Sketchbooks

On December 26th, 2019, I slipped on black ice in a parking lot and smashed my shoulder. I was in the hospital until January 3rd, 2020 and my shoulder was immobilized until mid-February. Aside from having to relearn how to do everyday activities like driving and cooking, I also had to relearn how to draw and paint.

A few weeks after I got back to work, an extremely deadly and contagious virus, which came to be known as COVID-19, shut down my job and most of my social activities, which gave me time to take some art courses on-line, participate in long-distance art challenges, and generally hang out in the studio experimenting with techniques and materials I had not yet tried. At the time of this writing, in April of 2021, we are supposedly in the last lockdown, and once everyone has been vaccinated, we will go back to normal - whatever that turns out to be. The most recent works are at the top.

Here's what I've been up to (click on the links to see the rest of the pieces):

Railway Cafe

Other Works, 2020

This is the collection of "everything else" that I completed during 2020, completed in between challenges, courses, and experimental works.

His Mistress's Shoes

Medieval Style

I went through a short period where I was trying out the style found in The Book of Kells. It was a lot of fun - I may do that again one day.

Expressive Watercolour

Expressive Watercolour - Line and Wash

I produced these during an online course led by Joanne Boon Thomas on ArtTutor.

Elephant Cow with Calf

Beginning Watercolour

I decided that since I had to relearn everything anyway, I should learn (for the first time) how to paint in watercolour. Some of these turned out well - the others look like they were done by someone who knows nothing about watercolour and has a gimped arm.

As They Come Around the Backstretch

Stampede Lockdown

In July of 2020, they cancelled the Stampede, so to get myself into the spirit of the Wild West, I did these.

Tortoise

Phil Davies' Lockdown Challenges

I took to the Internet to find tutorials to get myself motivated to make art. I discovered that Phil Davies, one of the ArtTutor instructors, had started a Pandemic Challenge group on Facebook that involved trying out different media and styles of art.
