What would you do if you had all the time in the world, and no one around to judge you? I've always been very interested in the style of art found in the Book of Kells, and these pieces are my homage to the artists of that long-gone era.

The reference image for "Christ and the Evangelists" was a lock-down colouring challenge from Durham Cathedral Library. I changed their original animal heads to the ones from the Book of Kells, and I replaced their border decorations with crab apple blossoms from my own crab apple tree.

These four Gospel covers were inspired by pictures in a book I have on The Book of Kells, published by Thames and Hudson in 1988. They appeared in "Light in the Storm," an on-line art exhibition hosted by the Sacred Arts Guild of Alberta during November of 2020.

These two were done for #inktober2020. "Hoping for Walkies" was for Day 10, on the theme of "Hope" and "His Mistress's Shoes" was done for Day 29, on the theme of "Shoes."
I created two collages in PhotoShop that included Celtic dog tattoos and ballet shoe tattoos that I found on a free tattoo web site, and elements from "Christ, King of the Universe" from the Book of Kells to create the door.
The text over the door comes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the section on "The Virtue of Hope." The PhotoShop collages I created were my references for these drawings. This is a departure from my usual style - I have always been fascinated by Celtic art, but up to now I haven't really attempted it very much. I am finding the process interesting.
"Hoping for Walkies" Our Story: The pup is so excited that he's going for a walk that in his rush to get to the door, he has gotten all tangled up in his tongue and his tail. I think his leash is caught in there, too! |
"His Mistress's Shoes" Our Story: The pup has found his young mistress's dancing slippers - Oh, no! Those long laces are getting all tangled up in his ears and his tongue! |
