The Book of Jobes

Fire Exit Theatre (Epcor Centre) February 26 to March 3rd 2013

These artworks were used to illustrate a play about a woman who was experiencing the trials of Job. As it happens, the character's name was Jobes.

This series of works follows the story of Job from the moment he discovers the death of his childen to the time when God restores his fortunes manyfold. 

“It’s All Gone Wrong!” A young teenager curls into a ball – something awful has happened and she must figure out how to react. When Job heard that his family had been killed, he no doubt reacted in a similar way.

“Job’s Comforters – ‘You Can Do It!’”  - Don’t get me wrong; I have the highest admiration for people who play sports while missing a limb or two – but when we put pressure on people to “normalize” at the lowest moments of their lives, are we not behaving much like Job’s comforters, who tried to get him to “get over” his troubles by blaming himself for them?

“The Examination of Conscience” – this still life painting is based on a series of drawings I did last summer with the Emmaus Group, featuring a random collection of objects. At the end of the drawing session, I realized that the microscope was making an “eye ball” on the vase, and I imagined that it was examining the other objects to discern whether they had any guilt. Job examined his conscience to see whether he had done anything to deserve what happened to him, and he found himself innocent of any wrongdoing.

“A New Perspective” – the boy is looking for a book and he thinks if he stands on his head, he will be able to see what he could not see while standing upright.  Job’s experiences gave him a totally new perspective on life, and strengthened his faith in God.

“Alone with God” – the fisherman is taking time out to be by himself on the water. His Church on the shore is brightly decorated for Easter; perhaps he will go there later.  Job spent time alone in conversation with God, and entered into a new and deeper relationship with Him.

“Prosperity Returns” – the chickens in the garden signify self-reliance – someone who can get his own eggs and vegetables never needs to lie to anyone.
