This show is a study in perspective as well as a philosophy of life. There is the literal sense of the term, in which we study the subject matter from below, looking up at it, and learn interesting things about perspective, such as that even though it looks and feels "wrong" while you're actually drawing from that angle, once you step back, it all comes together and looks as it should. There is also the saying we use, that 'things are looking up," meaning, various key aspects of our lives - health, finances, spiritual well-being, etc. - are improving.
For the first two pieces, I put the mannequin up in a tree near the studio and photographed her from a couple of different angles, and then used the photos as source material.
The third piece, "Morning Rush," is the first Expressionist piece I've done in a really long time. It's about the feeling I get when I pass under the LRT bridge at McMahon on my morning commute to work. The increasing number of pedestrians rushing to get the train indicates an improvement in the economy.
"Looking Up" started at Dalhousie Community Church on January 29th, 2018.
