Legends in Sand

Artist Statement

Inspired by Aisinai-pi

Including fragments from Blackfoot storytelling, and from the Epic of Legendary Taviel

Clues to reading the sand paintings:

  1. Lines signify numbers - the number of lines signifies the number of whatever the lines are attached to.
  2. Circles signify shields.
  3. Rectangles signify people. Sometimes they have body parts attached, and sometimes not. Lines underneath aren't feet - they signify the number of people.
  4. An eye signifies Taviel.An eagle signifies God.
  5. After the wedding, Rheanne becomes round. Their children cling to her sides. She has 12 boys and 4 girls.
  6. Rheanne, Travis, and Mary have their names inscribed on the rectangles that signify them, using Gregg's Shorthand.
