I love the way incandescent light caresses the curve of a beautiful wine bottle or glass. I love the slender branch of a tree or vine as it escapes into the air. I love the rugged surface of concrete, and the subtle, wonderful colors you find when you pick up a handful of pebbles. I love how posing the mannequin into an otherwise ordinary still life suddenly turns it into a child's play house: she makes ordinary objects seem to become huge, and without changing form or appearance, they suddenly turn into furniture. Even more interesting to me is how I can put objects together that seem to have nothing to do with each other, and a narrative emerges from the unexpected encounter. (Sizes are in inches.)
From Studio #105-1811:
I did these two out in Sharon Graham Sargent's backyard when I was visiting her.

These were created for the "UP close" show which took place at the Coffee House Sanctuary from March 7th to 27th, 2014. There are also others that were begun for this series, which I haven't yet had time to finish. My hope is to complete the rest of the series and post it here for your enjoyment. In this series, the lightbulb represents the protagonist in a coming-of-age story in which the protagonist discovers his vocation, together with the meaning of his life. |
I received a female mannequin as a Christmas gift from my father in 1992. He got it at Cowan Office Supplies in the town of Nelson, which, despite its name, is actually one of the better stocked artists' supply stores in that part of the world. The teddy bear chair was purchased some years later at a craft shop in Crawford Bay that no longer exists; there's a health food restaurant in the spot that it once occupied. These paintings are small studies, done in the style of my ever-evolving personal version of Expressionism. They were posed on the still-life stand at the studio, and they are autobiographical expressions. They signify the moods I happened to be in at the time I was painting them. All except "Tea and Oysters" were painted in one sitting. |
