Urban Landscapes - The Jim Dandy Tales

These are my results from following the tutorial "Urban Scenes" with Brian Smith on ArtTutor

I like how the colours and composition work together, especially the saturated yellows and reds contrasted against the neutral and muddy violet hues. In the first piece, I had trouble rendering the figures in bunches - this was a new technique for me. They got better and more relaxed in subsequent pieces. My card players look good. In the second lesson, my shadows got too dark and my telephone wires were rather wobbly. I made corrections using pencil crayons. In the third lesson, I had trouble with the building behind the cranes. Each try got worse, so I decided to leave it.

I was proud of my contrasting lights vs. darks, distances vs. foregrounds, and lines vs. washes and organic mark-making.

Overall I think these pieces are successful.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

Jim was trying to make a few extra bucks to take his lady out to dinner and a movie last Saturday, so he got out his guitar and all his gear, went downtown, and started playing his favourite folk tunes. Mary was out shopping with her Mom when she heard the music. After stopping and listening to two or three tunes, including “Puff the Magic Dragon,” her Mom gave her some change, and she put it into his guitar case.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

After Church this morning, Jim's lady said she wanted to stay and help the Women Helping Women put together care packages for the new Moms at the women's shelter. Jim decided to head over to Quon's to meet up with Geordie Fergeson for a cup of coffee and a game of cribbage while he waited for her to finish up.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

At lunch today, the guys decided to sit out on the pier to eat their sandwiches, because the weather was nice. Jim thought it would be funny to get them all to sing "Sittin' on the dock of the bay, wasting time ... " The boss overheard them, and just rolled his eyes. "You boys are lucky I have such a good sense of humour," he scowled.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

It's the lady's turn to choose the activity for this weekend's date, and because she's a modern lady (in some ways) with her own job, she's also paying the tab. She got tickets to "Turadot" - she's never seen it, but her mother says it's perfect for date night.

Jim was surprised how much he enjoyed it. He said to Geordie the next day, when they were playing crib again, "Once you get past the fact that it's in Italian, it's actually better than anything on TV. Although I do hope she doesn't get any ideas - if she sets me three challenges when I propose to her, I'm outta there!"

More Jim Dandy Tales

Followiing the tutorials, I created original urban landscapes, hopefully applying the lessons learned in the course. My references were photos I took during the summer of 2006 in Procter, during their Storytelling Festival. I combined references together to create imaginary scenes.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

In July of 2006, Jim was seven years old. For his birthday, his Dad took him out to the Kootenays to go fishing, to visit the Kootenay tribe, and to attend the Procter Storytelling Festival. Jim's favourite story was the story of Drags Grizzly, who became Chief of the Kootenay because of his bravery with a grizzly bear.

They also had children's stories, and Jim attended one that was about a monster. Part way through the story, the actual monster showed up! Jim and all of the other children were very upset, and the worst part was that the grownups didn't even notice what was happening - they were all just standing there, laughing among themselves about whatever it is that grownups laugh about, and the story teller was about to be attacked! Jim said, "We have to do soemthing! We have to get the monster!" The other children saw that he was right, so they all rushed up on to the stage, and with the force of their speed and combined body weight, they knocked the monster down! It was then that the grownups finally realized that something was wrong, so they came up to the stage as well, and they took the monster away - the lady who was telling the story looked startled, but she was not hurt at all, thank heavens.

Jim's Dad was in some kind of accident that same afternoon, and he had to go to the hospital, so Jim stayed that night with another family.

A Jim Dandy Tale:

Jim's favourite part of the evenings in Procter was sitting by the fire, roasting marshmallows, and listening to the men talk.
