For the "Stolen Artwork" challenge at Simply Art IAC, this is my take on "American Art." I combined Jasper Johns' "By the Sea" (1961) with Emily Carr's "Vanquished" (1930).

I found "Vanquished" on pages 42-43 in a catalogue provided by the Vancouver Art Gallery, titled "Beloved Land: The World of Emily Carr", published in 1996 by Douglas & McIntyre.

I found "By the Sea" on page 202 of a catalogue published in 1996 by the Museum of Modern Art in New York titled "Jasper Johns: A Retrospective" by Kirk Varendow, who was the curator in charge of the accompanying exhibition.
