ArtKula Prompts - August, 2021

This month's challenge is a little different...

Instead of 31 prompts, there are only four. The goal is to do four projects (approx. one per week) based on four loose themes.

Each project can be completed in any medium and style.

Apple

Project 1: Still life of fruit/veg

It could be a single apple, or a mixture of multiple different fruits and/or veg. You could take your own reference photo or look for one on the likes of Pixabay or Unsplash. It can contain other items too (containers, cutlery, other foodstuff) but the main emphasis must be fruit or veg.

Procter-Harrop Ferry Landing

Project 2: Landscape or seascape

Self-explanatory - and landscape or seascape again using either your own reference photo or a copyright-free one from the likes of Pixabay or Unsplash.

"Apple"

August 6, 2021
watercolour on mixed media sketchbook paper

This is my first still life painting in a long while. My drop cloth turned into an atmospheric background I think, but the apple itself turned out well.

"Procter Harrop Ferry Landing"
10x8 inches
August 10, 2021
watercolour and mixed media on mixed media sketchbook paper

This is from a photo I took during July of 2006, looking west from the ferry landing on Highway 3 Balfour / Nelson.

Giant Swallowtail

Project 3: Bird or Flying Insect
Some ideas to start you off: eagle, butterfly, owl, flamingo, dragonfly, kingfisher, bumblebee.

The Cyclist

Project 4: Human figure(s)
This can be in any pose, clothed or (tastefully) nude. It could be a single-figure study of someone lying on the couch or a couple walking down a path. It must be full-body (or most of the body) i.e. not just a headshot or upper body.

"Giant Swallowtail"
8x10 inches
August 12, 2021
watercolour and mixed media on mixed media sketchbook paper

Based upon a photo by Shelly Morales, at Every Artist's Reference Library.

The Giant Swallowtail is the largest butterfly in North America, with a wingspan of about 6 inches. It is typically found in the Eastern United States.

"The Cyclist"
10x8 inches
August 17, 2021
watercolour and mixed media on mixed media sketchbook paper

From a photo I took at Lower Waterton Lake during July of this year.
