My Catholic Christian spirituality is a very important part of my everyday life, and it often comes out in my art. Over the years, this collection of pictures has evolved from out of my wrestling, my exploring, and my wonder at this awesome Creator who gives us life and the means to celebrate our joy.
My thanks also to The Emmaus Group of Artists for providing opportunities to show a great many of these pieces.

"They Fished All Night" - 2014 Oil Pastel on Paper 12 x 9 inches Show: "The Element of Line" - The House Coffee Sanctuary, November 7th to 28th. This was our last show at The House before it closed down. I created the view of the bottom of the boat by looking at photos of boats on dry land that were turned upside down. The net is purely imaginary, as is the lone little fish who is deftly avoiding it. CODE: JRM017

Bishop Henry Blesses the People - 2005 Acrylic on Canvas 16x20 inches As we were leaving Corpus Christi Church to process to St. Luke's, in the Corpus Christi parade, Bishop Henry blessed us all with the Monstrance. CODE: JRM013 |
The Proclamation of the Gospel - 2005 Acrylic on Canvas 16x20 inches This is a painting of Father Myles proclaming the Gospel reading at St. Mary's Cathedral. It's about his voice booming into the quiet, and the smell of the sun coming through the stained glass, combined with the smell of the dust from the concrete walls, faintly overlaid with the incense from a recent funeral. CODE: JRM012 |
The Corpus Christi Procession - June 2005 Acrylic on Canvas 20 x 16 inches This painting came out of the experience of walking with the Legion of Mary and carrying a banner through a Corpus Christi procession. This painting is about feeling hot and thirsty, with aching knees from kneeling on the grass at each of the four stations, sore arms from holding up the banner while walking throughout the afternoon, and the joy of spending a few hours in the company of my Lord Jesus Christ, fully present in the Eucharist, out in the streets and parks of Calgary on a warm Sunday afternoon in June. Year of the Eucharist - March 2005 Acrylic on Canvas 14 x 18 inches NOT FOR SALE This painting was inspired by a child's drawing. We were running a poster contest for Fire in the Rose at Sacred Heart Church, when a child's drawing was turned in that inspired me to make this painting. We ran these contests every spring for several years. Our topics for the contests typically were things like "Peace in our Family" or "Say NO to Bullying" but this particular child ignored the topic altogether and chose to celebrate the Year of the Eucharist. While we were unable to award any prize to the child, I was charmed by the artwork, and before returning it to him, I made a version of it that combines my style with the child's style for my own collection. The Descent of the Holy Spirit - 2001 Acrylic on canvas 20 x 16 inches Shows: "New Beginnings" at Rocky Mountain College, Autumn 2012 I created this piece on April 14th, 2001, the same day that I was received into the Catholic Church, along with its companion piece, "Easter." CODE: JRM008 |
The Road to Emmaus - 2000 Acrylic on canvas 20 x 16 inches The tree in the background is the same Tree of Life that appears in my "Creation of Eve." The star is the same star that appears to the Wise Men in my imagination. (I feel sure I've made a painting of that scene, but I'm not finding any record of it.) Jesus is opening the Scriptures to the two disciples. I made the scroll look transparent to signify that he was making their meaning "transparent" to the disciples. The figures are painted in my version of the style they used to use in my Sunday School books when I was a kid. The story is about the second appearance of Christ after His resurrection. Two of his followers are running away from Jerusalem to Emmaus (approximately seven miles), because of His death. They are terrified and confused. So Jesus does something quite remarkable - He gives them a kind of prototype of the Mass. First, he greets them and speaks with them. Then, He opens the Scriptures to them and proclaims the Gospel to them. Next, they invite Him to dine with them. Then, they recognize Him coming to them in the breaking of the bread and the pouring of the wine. His human appearance vanishes - He has become the bread and the wine. After partaking of this, the disciples lose their fear - they rush out to proclaim the Good News to everyone they meet - they run back to Jerusalem to tell the Eleven! CODE: JRM007 |
Eric's First Eucharist - 2003 Acrlic on Canvas 14 x 18 inches
We were babysitting Hannah and Eric while their parents were away at a live-in retreat. Eric had recently made his First Holy Communion, and he made a drawing for me about his experience that inspired the painting you see here. CODE: JRM006 |

"Interior of Sacred Heart Church during Lent" - Spring, 1991 Graphite on paper 8 x 11 inches I spent a quiet Friday afternoon drawing in the Church. This was the result. CODE: JRM005 |
"From Jesus' pierced Heart comes the life-giving stream of the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. The grain of wheat, dying, becomes the new ear." - 1993 Oil on hand-constructed canvas board 9 x 12 inches The quotation is from a homily given by Father Myles Gaffney at the noon Mass at Sacred Heart Church on the Feast of the Sacred Heart in 1993. I spent the whole summer meditating on this truth. CODE: JRM004 |
Sacred Heart #4 - 1996 Acrylic on particle board 9 x 12 inches This is a continuation of my meditations on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I sold three of these between 1993 and 1996. One of them went to Bruce MacDonald, a historian with the Public Library at that time, who was a good friend during this period of time, and very supportive of my painting. CODE: JRM003 |
"Resurrection" variation #1 - 2003 Photoshop collage on Kodak paper 8.5 x 11 inches I hadn't actually intended for this to be a one-of-a-kind print, but I accidentally deleted the files before printing any more copies. This is a meditation on the Resurrection. The little girls signify the women at the tomb; the dove signifies the Holy Spirit; a stained glass Jesus is rising out of the tomb with stained glass angels at his feet, to represent the retelling of the story down through the ages. The joggers in the top section signify the disciples, running away in fear. CODE: JRM002 |
"Resurrection" variation #2 - 2003 Photoshop collage on Kodak paper 8.5 x 11 inches I hadn't actually intended for this to be a one-of-a-kind print, but I accidentally deleted the files before printing any more copies. This is a continuation of the meditation on the Resurrection. This time, Jesus is encountering Mary Magdalene in the garden. The dove remains, and so do the joggers. CODE: JRM001 |
