The Autumn Leaf Collection is an exploration of split triad colour theory. Beginning with the earthy orange-reds and yellows that are characteristic of Autumn colours, one arrives on the other side of the colour wheel at a warm blue. The palette is limited then as much as possible to these three colours, plus white and Payne’s Grey to vary the intensity and tone of these colours. I also mix them to arrive at various greens, violets, and oranges that harmonize with the base colours.
My goal is to capture the essential feel of those few days in late September and early October when the leaves are brilliantly red and yellow – those moments between the dark greens of late summer and the long season of dull browns and greys that so characterize autumn and early winter in Calgary – moments of brilliance so short that we almost miss them in our busy day-to-day lives.
The original collection was created during October and November of 2010. I started adding to it again during the Autumn of 2021.
It was originally displayed during a Studio Open House on December 11, 2010. Many of these pieces are available for viewing at The Iron Horse Art Gallery in Nanton, Alberta. Contact Judith at judith@judithmcrae.com to inquire.

"The Gravity of the Situation"This crabapple tree grows in our back yard. I have painted it at other times, and each time I paint it, the apples remind me of something - Original Sin, or Newton's Law of Gravity, or jelly.
- October 27, 2021
According to legend, Isaac Newton came up with the law of gravity when an apple fell on his head. Perhaps he was self-isolating, waiting for a pandemic to end - or was that when he invented calculus? The gravitational constant is 6.67 x 10 to the 11th power. (G) The force of gravity (F) is G x ((the Mass of the first object x the mass of the second object) / the distance between their centres) It only becomes meaningful if you are trying to launch a rocket into outer space, or if you are trying to divert an asteroid to keep it from hitting the Earth. Otherwise, the only time you have to worry about it is if you are standing underneath something that would be painful if it were to fall on your head, and in that situation, the mathematical formula is less helpful than your ability to scoot out of the way. acrylic on canvas panel 14x11 inches |
